Research summary

Climate change is affecting the health of Arctic ecosystems and threatening the sustainability of wildlife. Emerging diseases and the decline of wildlife populations are also having an impact on public health, food security and Indigenous ways of life.

Dr. Susan Kutz, Canada Research Chair in Arctic One Health: Healthy Animals and Healthy Communities in a Changing Arctic, is bridging Indigenous and scientific knowledge to better understand Arctic wildlife health. Using a “One Health” approach, she and her research team are collaborating with Indigenous communities, industry and public agencies to create new knowledge and frameworks. Ultimately, their research will advance conservation and improve ecosystem and community health by informing wildlife management, food security planning, policy and climate change mitigation in the Arctic.
