Research summary

The brain’s hippocampus plays an important role in forming memories. Dr. Katalin Tóth’s research has already shed light on the cellular mechanisms that are essential to memory, learning and spatial navigation. Now, as Canada Research Chair in Chair in Neuronal Signalling, she aims to figure out how the brain creates, stores and retrieves memories.

More specifically, Tóth and her research team will identify how neurons in the hippocampus process incoming information to code and retrieve new memories. Understanding these complex processes is essential for developing effective treatments for the loss of memory that occurs in Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
