Research summary

Our global communications networks use optical fibre to send information across distances that can range from a few kilometres to thousands. The demand on these networks is growing continuously, so we need ways to improve their performance.

As Canada Research Chair in Optical Fiber Communications Systems, Dr. David Plant is approaching this by focusing on two types of optical fibre communications systems: coherent and direct detection-based. He and his research team are developing and demonstrating new systems architectures and digital signal processing schemes. Ultimately, their work will help to increase the capacity, spectral efficiency and transmission distances of these systems.
